The lives of women in the Middle Ages through illumination
This short video from the University of Sherbrooke (Canada) addresses the social and religious representation of women through the art of illumination.
Through the richness of their illuminations, the manuscripts offer us a vast field of study regarding the religious and social representations of the medieval universe. What do their pages illuminated with precious miniatures and the rich ornamentation of their margins teach us? Illuminator artist, Sylvie Poirier is currently writing a dissertation which focuses on the analysis of religious and social representations of women in French Romanesque-Gothic illumination, under the direction of Professor Patrick Snyder.
